Slow performance cleaning and previewing song

joe b
posted this on January 17, 2011 02:07 pm

I have used Tuneup for over a year, just recently I havent used it in months and when I wanted to clean up some music, it is painfully sluggish. I tried updating itunes and rebooting but it is still very slow. Here are some examples.

-Cleaning Music takes forever.. the timer says 1 minute but that one minute stretches to 15 mintues.

- When I drag music over to clean, its not too bad processes them ok, however when I go through and click the Play button from Tuneup the first song will play instantly, but if I preview the next song too fast, it will take about 15 seconds before it will actually play the next song. But if i wait 15 seconds or so before I play the next song from Tuneup it responds instantly.

Hi Joe,

Unfortunately, sometimes TuneUp is a CPU hog so-to-speak, and performance time varies on different computers. TuneUp averages around 20% CPU usage, and may be a little slow cleaning music, especially if you have a large collection.

If you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to write a Support ticket, as our forums are more for general discussions among users and not one-on-one support.

Thanks,

I have a duel quad core xeon 5460 series Mac Pro 2.8 ghz X 8, 4 GB ram and a 32 Mb Cache 2TB hard disk drive that gets a very good benchmark and I lost about 50 % performance when starting iTunes and when trying to use the tune up application at all. It is true that I have a large library but it's not on my mail OS HD and I have donee many tests and no matter what id do, iTunes still starts slower than it did when I was using it on the last version that iTunes was so buggy I just used my ipod until it was updated. How can I stop it from starting with iTunes every time?

Now i have a very big unsatisfied taste towards tuneup as previously it did a good job by giving a good and accurate info on the song and now....the correct info was been replace with a different info for example of my abracadabra song by sound-G and dunno who go and programe tuneup to make it into other album.......which makes me fear...even accurate info becomes wrong info as the song writer is not a song composer...if you want to make that song writer into account...then make a new category of it....instead put a wrong song composer person.....as composer job is to just sing a tune as the song writer just wrote the song to be meaningful...and then the composer just sing the whole thing so....people who work as a writer dosent meant he/she can compose that song.......so thee colaborate to make that song workable...so please...make a place in song category as "THERE" is a song writer place instead of misplace a name which even change the whole song album art.....i am a passion song collector and all this minor stuff...annoys me....mood swing and stuff...so the tuneup previous version is much better...thx

I am becoming more disatisfied with this program... I belive in it's capability and functionality but seriously has become riddled with more and more issues with each update. The posts here are accurate and stand tall. The program is becoming pathetically slower, locks up and even with the nearly the same powerhouse setup and configuration of J. Wheeler's setup, I still find it of NO excuse for this company to continue in this manner. For all simplistics, iTunes itself is a modern day complete tragedy; TuneUp, though I love it for many a positives, is consistantly becoming the second part of a horrible marriage to iTunes. Getting it to 'functionally' do it's basic job with queing up your inventory and being slow to allowing the end customer get right into throwing clean up jobs at it is pathetic! This is too slow to keep recommending. I challenge the code editors to look into this. I also challenge them to use more CHECK BOXes to turn off the initial, 'Importing track data into TuneUp, this will take about one second for every 500 tracks...' is utter B.S.! Get these bugs fixed once and for all. Lastly, I also agree that 'DeDuper' for trial is a GAFF! Paid customers should have been honored to receive this for all we've put up with and a small add-in for being 'previously paid' customers... Just my thoughts, but it would have surely been a small return for what we paid for - and what the customer gets.

I agree with the other posts- this program sometimes takes a very long time to process.  The time estimates given have no basis in reality.

I have already been annoyed by having to buy ANOTHER lifetime copy of TuneUp but when I see constant complaints and NO FIXES is this company actually serving it's customers or taking the money and laughing all the way to the bank?

Wake up TuneUp - you are losing customers by failing to look at the problems arising and not releasing regular updates to fix them.

I have less than 10,000 songs, and TuneUp is taking roughly 36 hours to analyze and clean them, with nearly 100% CPU usage the entire time. This is no exaggeration. I've had to turn off all background processes, and basically not use my computer since last night, and expect it to last well into tomorrow. For what!!?? Once the songs are analyzed, it's just fixing the tags on a set of MP3 files. Shouldn't this just take a few minutes? I don't have a "ultra fast" computer, but it's dual core media machine, and it never gets bogged down like this. This is beyond pathetic.

I could not agree more with the majority of the comments here-  I have a 3Ghz Quad Core Xeon with 16gb RAM and at least 4 TB hard disk space free.  This program does not function as it should.  I agree it is a total "resource hog", but even with optimal processing capacity, this program spends most of its time to  "phone home" to process, and this appears to be the rate limiting step in the program.  I would caution prospective customers to consider other options until these people get their act together and make this program work properly.  Getting the art work should be an easy thing to automate (google images does a great job of finding artwork), but this program seems to screw this up quite often- it should, for example, check to see if the artwork is actually available for download, before presenting the link as an option.   Instead, it shows a thumbnail, and when selected, "not available" is displayed.  Sad, really, when simple things like this stump the programmers.  When are you guys going to fix these problems?

As Far as Artwork is concern I have pretty much given up on tuneup because all it really does is Display "Not Available". Dr. Dee1280 try this program for art The Artwork locator from Zelek software It's really is worth the $22 I have used this program & got most of the art from this program.. You have go through Hundreds of art to find the one you looking for but has all the artwork for any artist you are looking for. It's a lot better than Just 4 images & sometimes Tuneup does not even find a correct match for album that you need. lot times the 4 selection don't even match

Works for me, how should I set it up?

Things have been continuing but very slowly.  It took about 2 whole days to apply cleaning updates to 1300 albums and it always gives me an error saying "cannot reach tuneup severs" while it is trying to do this.  I really hope all the changes take.

I've created a support ticket.  Still having lots of problems with performance.  At the moment it is almost unusable.  I click on it and then wait for a few minutes... click again and wait.

It seems to not know that it has already cleaned tracks so it re-processes my whole library and gives me all of them to clean again.  Though this could just be a error on my part or some problem with dragging and dropping while it is not responsive.

I swear all the comments above are right on.   The app just works better on a PC.  I transferred my first lifetime license to my Mac thinking it'd be utopia.  It's been hell.   It just hang forever.  I have a quad processor MacPro.    When it works it works well but it's painful trying to keep my large library clean.

Really you guys should charge or offer a product when really your Mac version is truly still in Beta at best.

This is absolutely annoying. Tuneup is completely closed cannot play anything while it's running. I Can't even go the web while it's running. Tuneup take forever to clean Just 1 full 11 track album (a couple of Hours). the very first post is retarded. They to fix this problem. Their is no excuse I have very large Library 114,000 & counting bur some users don't even have 20,000 & it's not working for them either so doubt it's the size of the library that is the problem. It's Tuneup! Just Fix It!.

Hello,I am sorry to bother the support with one more comment on the performance issue on this very nice software.

My Configuration is :

Pentium Dural Core CPU T4200 @2.00Ghz / 4 Go RAM / Procecessor 64 bits / Windows 7

I think Screenshots can explain more than a huge explanations..

Screenshot : Tuneup Media & Itunes few minutes after their launching. In the screenshot, one music is playing and no music cleaning are processed. My Processor is already at 100%....When i try to clean 10 songs, i have to shut down the application just before the end because my computer begins to freeze. Tell Me what should i do ? I dont understand why each time when cleaning Itunes is at 50% and Tuneup at 50% UC too..Can't we use Tuneup media without itunes ? Why UC of itunes and Tuneup are low when saving coverart and informations...and when searching database UC explose to 100% (50% Tuneup and Itunes)

Hi,

In some cases, songs can become "un-cleanable" for various reasons. It may be that there is a gap before the song starts or after it ends or some of the song got cut off. It could also be that the songs were encoded to mp3 or m4a in such a way that they are now unable to be recognized by Gracenote. These songs can cause TuneUp to timeout.

Unfortunately, the only way to find these songs right now is to slowly feed in smaller amounts of songs into TuneUp. Start with 500 or so, and cut down the amount that you feed TuneUp in half. This should lead you to the problematic files. You can then manually add them to the "Cleaned by TuneUp" playlist.

Best Regards,

Change the priority of TuneUpApp and iTunes in task manager to 'below normal' or 'low' if your on a PC. Regardless it'll run slow because it is doing a lot of data analysis and changing your files around. I have a pretty fast PC and it runs slow still.

By doing the above though you can at least still use your PC while it cleans your library. If you don't know how to do it, google it. You can also change it on the shortcut to start at a lower priority.

I would suggest this for TuneUp to add this into your config as this is a huge system hog like you said. Give users the ability to still use their PC while it takes days to clean. Just makes sense.

I would just suggest letting it run overnight for a few nights, depending on the size of your library. And keep your PC in a cool unrestricted place as the processor will run close to or at 100% for hrs straight.

To be honest guys, I really wish I had read some of these posts before downloading this program and buying a lifetime subscription. this program has become my ultimate technical nightmare. Unlike some of the other power users, I only have a measly 2Gig of RAM...as a consequence, everything else goes haywire when I launch Tuneup. Combining this with iCloud is a seriously bad idea, but just on it's own with iTunes is causing me endless grief and hours (that I can never get back) trying to get one thing to work properly. Yes, it has done me a good turn first time with a few songs, but really not worth the agro.

I don't suppose a refund is out of the question...?

Yes - 1 hour to save the tags to 143 albums is RIDICULOUS. that's only 1500 songs, which is 2.4 seconds per song!

They are roughly 4mb files, which means i'm getting on average 1.5mb per second data write? Again, that is ridiculous.

I have been running 'clean' for about 1 week against 25,000 +/- music files on my local hard drive. Running Windows 7 64bit quad 4 8gb memory. I shut down all other non-essential processes running and see that even though Tuneup is consuming 1,085,732 of memory it still locks up and I continually get message "tuneup service not available please try again in a few seconds". Unfortunately, the 'clean' service says I have 26:44:29 hours to go until it finishes and the program stops when the service unavailable message is displayed so not sure am I supposed to sit here and respond to that message every time or is this going to take several weeks to finish? I'm not even sure it is doing the right thing at this point. I bought this product about 3 weeks ago over some other competitive products and now am of the opinion that this is not commercially ready to be released. I think it is a good idea but has not been implemented well at all. At the rate this program is processing my songs it will take more than a month and then I still need to play with DeDuper.

I have 81 albums which were classified as "Likely Matches" and after I run the "Save All" they show up in a pink/red highlight. I'm assuming they are not matches at al and select "Clear All" which then asks me if I really want to clear them without saving. Huh? Some indicate several tracks found so not sure if partial match or no match at all and if I have already saved why am I being asked if I reallly want to Clear without saving?

Is anyone supporting the servers/application on this long MLK weekend? I am a recent subscriber. This is a very cool service about 5 minutes every hour - when the servers are actually responding. Does anyone actively monitor/address performance issues? Is there sufficient VC funding to buy some additional servers or staff to help this cool product scale up to the size of the existing community? If the service was working consistently, I would have an hour of two of work to do. At the current rate, clean up will be a multi-day (multi-week) exercise.

Wow, from the intensity of the whining being posted here you'd think this program was failing to keep somebody's pacemaker running. (Bobby can you say "piece of shit" just ONE more time, it makes you sound almost grown up.) OK, processing time for me does not meet expectations, I am seeing maybe 20 sec per song instead of 3-5, which certainly scales when I am crunching through a sizeable library. But then again, I am not staring at the screen watching either. I set it to run and go out into the real world, playing sports, getting laid, obviously the kinds of things some of the self-indulgent whiners above might wanna consider at least once before slitting their emo wrists in a fit of self-pity. Having just returned from Afghanistan I am happy when I have a bed I don't share with scorpions or a night that isn't interrupted by helicopters or the sound of IEDs nearby. If somebody told me that a hiccup in organizing my music library would throw me into a vulgar, midol-munching fit i would have laughed. From what I read here the MFRs are offering free tech support, so use it. Sorry it isn't a mind-controled, instantaneous-fix program so you can whine about the next reeeeeally important crisis in your self-entitled lives. Man up, grow some balls and use the tools available to you.

FWIW I have been running 600 to 900 songs per batch pretty much nonstop for the last couple days. Thus far no freezes, hangs, whatever. On 800 songs I will get maybe 5 "red" results and the rest are coming out pretty much as expected.  Mac OS 10.7.2 on a MacPro Quad-Core Intel Xenon tower

This is absolutely ridiculous. I bought the lifetime membership and then bought deduper when it was released and now I can`t even use it. When I fire up iTunes Tuneup automatically runs and my processor automatically jumps to 100%. I have to force quit the process just to use my iTunes and needless to say I haven`t been able to clean ANY music at all. If I had an old computer this might be understandable but I am running a dual core AMD Athlon X2 5.2 ghz with 4 gigs of ram so it is not a computer issue. This seems to be a problem with tuneup`s interface with iTunes as my iTunes will hog a ton of cpu as long as tuneup is running but will drop to almost zero as soon as I quit tuneup. I used to enjoy this program and it worked flawlessly but now it is sheer torture and I am back to manually typing in information. I have tried uninstalling iTunes and tuneup multiple times and still the same problem. This is very frustrating and I fell a bit ripped off. Any ideas on a fix or maybe just a refund?

I will notify you when the update takes place.

I have used this program in the past and was quite impressed with its capability. Now, however I need to clean about 9,000 songs I recently added to my Library.  Program is not useful at current performance levels. After submitting trouble ticket I was informed a new release would be out shortly. This was before I read above comments of isues, of which I have also experienced. Would be great if we could pin down a date - as it appears that this has been promised before - of when we can realistically expect these issues resolved with a new release. (I am sure all the above individuals would be happy to test / or not).  I like the product and will wait only if timeframe is realistic otherwise will move on to something else! Note: Have also submitted ticket within last week.

I've had the same problems that everyone else is reporting here.

I gave my PC the once -over and uninstalled some software that was never used and then cleared out all my temporary files with Piriform CCleaner.

I ran the cleaner part of the application and the registry cleanup tool and I've found that this has stopped all the constant crashing of Tuneup. The slowness of processing and particularly saving the tracks is noticably better too - it's back to normal now. Admittedly this app. does hoover up a lot of resources but I'm finding that my five year old PC  is coping well now. My library is 80,000 tracks.

After the cleanup, I started processing in small batches (30 tracks at a time to start with) and have worked up and am currenlt processing a batch of 250, apparently without any problems.

The whole thing sort of makes sense as Tuneup worked well to start with and the problems with slowness, freezing and crashing crept in. I've no idea why this might have worked but it seems to be effective so far. I'll process some really large batches and report back to this Thread.

Now then... can I just ask, with all due respect to all you users, could we all try and report solutions that we've found rather than endlessly complaining, sometimes in quite a strong way. Get some perspective guys; 'Fraud' is a very strong word and so is 'Shit'. This is just a piece of software and it's not like it cost a lot... if we all try and be constructive, perhaps the product will improve. I agree that it should work straight out of the box, but some of you are very brave with your strong language behind the anonimity of your keyboards. Try to show at least the bare minimum of respect or I imagine you are likely to be ignored.

Paul - tried your suggestions. Got tuneup running - identified album to clean - which was found - but after attempting to save, CPU went to 100% and pretty much stayed there. I had no other programs running. Both itunes and tuneapp were using minimal resources. Could not get a screen shot from Task Manager because of high CPU usage. So no further ahead. Point to note also I am trying 'rinsemymusic', still working with their support (RealNetworks) to get it to work (it is also buggy) (and they have plugin banner issues after uninstalling - needs o deleted from itunes)  and they are also not very responsive.  Since I have used TuneUp in the past and was quite happy with it - will see what response we get. If there support people are reading this forum - maybe we can dialog with them to see how to resolve CPU usage issues sooner than later.

It is frustrating isn't it? My friend has an app on his iPhone with which you can identify a song that's playing on the radio, just by the app 'listening' to the song.

To my inexpert mind it seems like it must be simple 'if this app can do it seemingly instantly'... but what do I know?

I did get the same issue when I was saving - not able to do enything at all, not even ctrl-alt-delete.

I guess the trouble is we just want this programme to visibly start ploughing through the tracks we drop into it. You do get the impression from the stuff on the front end that it will, so maybe there's an issue with the software designers managing expectations.

i find that I drop a lot of stuff in and then there's a massive pause (am doing 700 tracks just now and it's done nothing for about 1.5 hours...) and then a flurry of activity and a decent-ish rate of identifying tracks. Then a noticable slowness of  whole system while it saves stuff.

I wonder if it sends actual music file data to the server for some sort of direct comparison or crunches the files locally with an algorythm and sends over a kind of summary for assessment? Do folks out there find that different internet connection speeds have a bearing on the performance of the app.

I'm on a relatively narrowband satellite link with +500mS additional latency out here, but haven't tried the app on anything better yet.

I Hate to Break the news to Everyone. No matter what issues this so called big update fixes it won't matter unless it addresses the main issue. If you write down all the issues with tuneup they all one big issue in common 100% computer usage until tuneup address that issue no matter what they do tuneup will never work properly. Think about Everyone Itunes does not consume 100% of your computer resources rendering your computer useless. It has nothing to do with External Hard Drives or library size. It is in fact 100% a major Tune Tuneup issue. Tuneup can try to Fix all the minor issues but they do not Fix the BIG ONE it won't matter. Itunes Has it's issues but they are so minor you can deal with them.

I agree - I have a fibre internet connection - not a problem with speed.  So Bobby is right - 100% CPU. Note: Issues with product 'Rinse' as well - now from RealNetworks - will see what they come up with.  Anybody suggest another product?

I Have Rinse on my computer & have used up the trial version You said  It has the same issue 100% computer usage. I did not notice it slowing down my computer of course I don't have the Full Version. I been reluctant to Pay 40 bucks for it. Do they give refunds without Question. I just about ready to ditch Tuneup & give Rinse a try. I drag 1 album into Tuneup click save & boom computer is Useless

No discount code available. BTW figured out I had to remove TuneUp Companion to get Rinse working properly - however it is also a resource hog - will use it for now - price irrelevant.  I think Tuneup is still the better program. And will use once the issues are resolved. My library 80,000 and building so will still need a great product.

Rinse also slow - and 100% CPU - but works - TuneUp still easier to use and a better product!!!

Is This a Joke! are planning releasing an update or not. You have promising an update for over a month. come on already. Do you enjoy losing customers because of fact the program does not work. you can at least give up a release date instead of giving empty promises

I have been putting up with the constant babysitting of the program, having to re-drag-and-drop the songs over and over until they get a result, and usually only returning between 5-25 at a time -- but TuneUp at least worked on those few results, and I kept on trucking.  But suddenly, Clean wouldn't let me save any of the results.  I'd click on either "Save All" or individually, and it would go gray for a second, then be clickable again -- but nothing will save!  So, I uninstalled both TuneUp AND iTunes FULLY with YourUninstaller! "Super" mode, CCleaner + CCEnhancer, and TuneUp Utilities 2012 for FULL cleanup of the programs.  I restarted, grabbed the newest installers, re-installed them both, setup iTunes completely fresh, started a new Library and dragged all 22,000 MP3's back into iTunes, setup TuneUp, etc.  But, It STILL has the problem!  I can no longer use the main feature of TuneUp anymore, and it is frustrating! I JUST bought this program a few days ago!  Plus, the Cover Art "feature" never worked from the get-go (the art never actually saves). I've even tried re-taking ownership of the songs, unsetting the read-only tag, converting them all to id3 v2.3, etcetera.  DeDuper and Tuniverse work fine, but I don't care about those nearly as much as the other two broken things!  Please help!

I been told it's going to be about 2 weeks before Tuneup Updates. It does sounds like will solve the big issues with tuneup hopefully. I have also been told their going to new Interface so it would likely be a good Idea Just to completely uninstall Tuneup Until Tuneup updates & re download when the update is release so their won't be any problems. It is likely this will necessary anyway when when the update is released.  My best Guess for the release will be either 27th or 28th but likely no later then the 3rd of March

Just got an email saying 2.4.2 is out and it should fix our issues, and it should autoupdate.  It did not autoupdate, nor did launching the updater manually work.  SO I just re-downloaded it from the site, and noticed that it is indeed version 2.4.2 now.  I am installing now, and I'll update if anything changes.  *fingers crossed*

Welp, they changed the interface up a bit, which doesn't bother me one way or another -- though there IS more positive feedback on what you clicked on and such, and it's more responsive in that way.  Also, there is a progress bar for the initial startup library scan.  BUT -- and this is a big BUT -- I dragged a whole 25 songs to the cleanup area, and it started looking for matches and then about 2 seconds later went back to showing "Ready to Clean!".  I tried re-dragging the same songs over again, but it gave me a message that said to wait for it to be finished processing before dragging more songs.  I quit iTunes and TuneUp, relaunched them, and I get the same message/error right away...  So, now the "Clean" tab is even MORE broken than before!!!  At least before, I could clear all and re-drag until I got results, but now I can't even do THAT!!!  This is ridiculous........

Another update, this time regarding the DeDuper.  It seems to be running about 25% slower, but it also uses 25-50% less CPU so there isn't the whole-system takeover going on with 100% CPU usage anymore!  That is a good tradeoff IMHO, as I'll take the extra few minutes it takes (16 mins as opposed to 13 mins) over not being able to use the rest of my computer, LOL!

OK, after waiting for awhile, I tried re-dragging the songs back to the Clean tab and it worked this time.  More good news with the CPU usage -- it only used between 42-86% while searching and saving, instead of 100%!  Seemed to be a tad faster actually, and everything is more responsive.  It does a MUCH better job of releasing resources while running in the background, as well.  Next, I'm going to try the Cover Art tab, as that never really worked very well for me (if at all sometimes).

Cover Art works just about the same as before (read: not all that great), even still using high CPU.  But I can use other programs for Album Art, or do it manually.

Overall, I am happy to finally have an update for TuneUp.  It's an improvement, especially in responsiveness and less CPU usage.  Thanks for the update!

I bought and downloaded this program 2 days ago. it has yet to work at any time. I have been trying to clean 50 songs for over 24 hours. Nothing yet, it starts out saying that 5/50 are being cleaned and then it goes back to the ready to Clean screen. TThen i try to add more songs to clean and it says that the 50 are still cleaning. I try to click on something else in the program and then it stops responding making it to require a program shutdown. Please help me with this problem. I have tried the suggestion from the help file for deleting the ClenDB file, still no change?

Okay - I have over 70,000 songs and have given up for awhile - even with Rinse.  I am now rebuilding my library with Musicbrainz Picard - works great - install add-on for CD Cover Art. You can clean your files and then drag them into itunes. Oh and btw - its free.

i bought Tune Up a couple months ago and have not been impressed with it's performance.  If I leave it on all day it will usually stop responding and my CPU will be maxed out.  The only way to close the program is to power off my computer.  Also cleaning 500 songs takes hours not minutes.  It may find the song information in a couple minutes, for 20-30 songs but that is the ony thing that takes minutes.

They also need to add an over ride album option.  I have a lot of music from cd's with various artists and it does not do a very good job with them and if it is a multi cd set it is even worse.  It may find the first cd but t will not usually find cd2 etc..

Three days ago I dragged 21 songs from iTunes to the "clean"  panel.  I am still waiting for a response.  What's worse, I cannot cancel the operation.  Even when I reboot the machine (Windows 7), TuneUp claims to take up where it left off.  This function of TuneUp seems to have bit the dust.

Call me naive but after my complaints about tuneup and performance, the people from tuneup were nice enough to credit me the full amount.

Since I believe that products do get better, I downloaded the new version a couple of days, believing there would be improvements. Now, it almost looks as if it got worse on my i5 iMac. Slow performance and my CPU heats up to dangerous values. Sorry to say but I am very disappointed.

Hi Olaf,

We apologize if there is any confusion related to the TuneUp 64 bit update.

At this time, the new 64-bit update is available only for non-Mac App Store Mac users. We are working on an update for the Mac App Store version, but there is a different approval process and it has not been released yet.

Please keep and eye on the TuneUp Support Forum Announcements for more news on the next update:

http://support.tuneupmedia.com/forums

In the meantime, please uninstall your Mac client installation using the instructions below:

1.) Click on the "Finder" icon, located on the bottom left hand side of your dock

2.) Select "Applications" from the column on the left side of the window, then locate the TuneUp application in the list provided

3.) Click and drag the TuneUp icon from the list of applications into your trash can

You can reinstall TuneUp from your Mac App Store account.

I also have problems where I have done a loooong dedupe and it won't allow me to Dedupe all. Please make it work as there is no better product i can find.

I have just bought this program - before I ran it I had 25GB free on my HD.  Now I have less than 1GB free, a system that barely functions because there is no disk space, and no apparent reason why I have lost 24GB of HD just to clean my music.  Can anyone explain how I reclaim my HD space?

How old is your computer. That is a very small Hard Drive. Computers have come with hard drive smaller than 100 GB for about 10 years.

2. their is no way that Tuneup took that much space Tune up is only about 30mB

If you have only a 25GB hard drive you don't need help from tuneup you need a new computer

Hello everyone.  I have been a TuneUp user since it was FANTASTIC prior to Vista.  As most of you on this thread, I've experienced what can only be described as "runaway" CPU usage which hasn't improved over the past two years or so of updates.  While troubleshooting this on my Win7 dual-core PC, I found that setting the affinity to just one of the CPU's left the second one available for Windows and iTunes to actually continue running and doing their thing, despite a large database size.  I hate resetting the affinity every time I want to use TuneUp so I made a .bat file in the TuneUp directory with the following line:

start /low /affinity 2 tuneupapp.exe

Then I created a shortcut to this .bat file and use it instead of the regular TuneUp shortcut.  This .bat file forces the program to run only on core 2 and using the Windows memory environment.  I set TuneUp not to automatically launch with iTunes...but instead, launch iTunes first and when it settles down, run the shortcut to the batch file.

The difference in performance has been dramatic.

I actually will be using the program again (but checking the art and the nebulous results on live and remixed tracks.)  I hope one day we can get back to the good old days of having user-contributed data and servers that specialize in certain music types.  When gracenote bought up the contributor-built data we worked so hard to create in the 90's, it was the beginning of the end.  TuneUp should let us choose regional or music-type-specific CDDB servers and let us choose our preferred cover art source (Last.fm, google, Amazon)

But that's just my 2 cents.  Good luck everyone.

First off, Weyman Hilton, Thanks for the great comment.  I set affinity and it does seem now to keep iTunes from totally hanging up (at least for the last 20 minutes or so working with it).

I've used TuneUp for more than 2 years as a lifetime member. Never really had issues with it other than slow processing, which really didn't bother me.   Recently, I discovered a lost backup that contained thousands of tracks, and I integrated them into iTunes and am tagging them (I'de not used TuneUp much for about a year having a clean library).

Here's my experience.  I have 28K current tracks.  Tuneup launches fine (either with or after iTunes, though I prefer after as I don't always keep it running).  It cleans fine when that's all I'm doing. Hoever, my current process is rating my tracks, and cleaning up a rare few missing art and proper tags, so TuneUp is simply running while I'm working through iTunes and I occasionally throw 1 track at it for fixing.  I have a smart playlist listing all unrated tracks (I use numerous smart playlists based on star rating and genre for playback on remote devices and for syncing, so rating the 10K new tracks I reintegrated is a long process).

VERY often, I'l simply be playing a track, or when I click the star rating to set it, TuneUp and iTunes will suddenly consume 100% CPU resources, BOTH become unresponsive, and this can last 10-15 minutes, during which iTunes does for a while continue playing, and may even switch tracks on its own, but displays no progress or UI updates.  Sometimes TuneUp relents and everything returns to normal, other times I have to manually kill TuneUp and after about 30 seconds iTunes returns to normal.  This is when NOT scanning tracks, just with TuneUp running at all.  WTF?

I'm running Win 7 Ult 32bit w/ 4GB RAM.  My iTunes media is organized on a SATA drive (M:), my user profile is on G:, and iTunes, Windows, and TuneUp are all installed to C: in default paths.  (C: I keep clean except for apps and logs, I use a D: for swap, G: was my data drive byt my media outgrew it and was migrated to a 1.5TB drive seperately, which is soon to be striped to 2.5TB with the addition of one more SATA drive and dynamic disk expansion).  I also have an R: drive (3TB) for backups on eSATA.  G: is a 3 drive RAID 5 (on AMCC IDE 8 port controller, something left over from an old server using 300GB drives).

Why it tuneup doing ANYTHING  when I'm not actively scanning tracks?  And certainly, whatever it;s doing, why does it peg the CPU?  Core affinity seems to have mitigated the imact of it;s issues, but it is still DOING something which impacts the system, just now I'm not losing core 1's performance concurrently so my system remains responsive.

If TuneUp support needs logs, I'm happy to provide them (email me, I ikely won;t check back here often).

Hi there. I purchased tuneup last night ($29.95 for the a la carte clean) and the program has been terribly unreliable so far.

Like many of the users above I am being constantly required to restart my itunes/tuneup apps after they hang. Usually after having identified only 30, or in many cases, no songs from my library. When the app does work it works well but I am sending this while my computer attempts for the third time to get the album and genre information for a 50 song collection.

I'm asking for a full refund right now. I was thrilled by the trial version but tuneup has failed in almost every aspect of its cleaning functionality since I payed for it. The rate at which tuneup has actually managed to connect and provide me with information leads me to believe I would be better off entering the information myself.

Please provide me with a support ticket so we can move this process along. Thank you for your time.

I bought tuneup on 26th July 2012 and have been trying to clean my library ever since, I have it running for about 6 hours a day and it simply isn't doing its job.  The performance is VERY slow for updating ID3 tags, and it constantly crashes and I have to relaunch itunes.

Is there going to be a patch or update coming - otherwise it's just not doing what it is designed to do.

I have a brand new MacBook Pro, quad core with 16GB ram, surely this should not be a problem?!

If this can't be resolved I'm going to have to request my money back so I can buy Rinse instead.

Bought it after a trial with 50 tunes and seemed to work OK.  Then became super slow, locked up computer several times and required restarts just to get computer back.  After reading a few posts here, decided to change priority to below normal (still takes about 30% of CPU, and batch in smaller amounts - 100 songs, and although not speedy by any means it gets the job done in the background and I still have a computer that works.  Unfortunate that I can't queue the whole library and have any confidence but at least it sorta working.  Authors need to look into this.  They are getting a very bad rap.

I bought tuneup yesterday and I'm 100% dissatisfied with the quality of this application.  I'm having to to clean songs one at a time and even cleaning one at time either locks my laptop or forces it to shut down.  I am operating on windows 7(64 bit) with AMD Turion (Tm) X2 dual core2.20ghz  processor with ram of 4gb.

I would like a refund please so I can uninstall this application.

I work for a software company so understand the challenges it represents. I have given up on this software though. All I hear back from support and responses on this forumare excuses. I did not get a chance to work with it when i first bought back in the spring and by the time I did I didn't think it was with in a reason time frame to request a refund. Unless they make some serious changes to how the software work it is worthless and wish I had never bought it. What a waste of money. I get better results and performance from free software.

I'm kind of in the same boat as a number of other folks here having bought the software some time ago and have been struggling with the performance and basically overall results of what the software is supposed to do. At this point I'm not sure the music in my library is actually 'cleaned' properly or if songs have been 'deduped' then I don't have confidence in the several thousand songs that have been processes by Tuneup that are now in my library. I have stopped using the product for several months now thinking I would simply go back to my original files and either tackle the cleaning job song by song or maybe wait for a new product to hit the market that might possibly solve this problem. Is this really such a difficult programming feat? If anyone knows of another product that might be an alternative I'd love to hear about it.

I bought a 1 year subscription a yesterday. It can't handle my computer even though its beyond the minimum requirements stated on the website. running dedupe causes 100% CPU use and everything stops responding! I would like money back!

It's amazing and at the same time very sad to see that after almost 2 years the TuneUp team has done nothing to solve this bug. I really gave up with this software as all it does is freeze my computer as basically the application consumes 100% of all resources (Not even close to the 20% I saw from the TuneUp support team). It's a complete waste of money but I consider that it's even worse the waste of time as I spent many hours trying to make this thing work.

People from Tune Up, you should be more serious and stop selling a software that doesn't work.

After purchasing with much excitement, I also noticed much slow performance to completely bog down my machine so I stopped using the product.  While it's such a wonderful idea, the application itself is completely garbage.  Wish I can get my $50 bucks I paid for...  Uninstalled it today and never going to use it again.  Wish all of you guys luck using this product...

I've been using Tuneup for more than a year on my Quad core iMac and have done all the updates and also tried reinstalling from scratch.  There have been a few instances where the program was buggy but with many restarts would SLOWLY make its way through 25 song batches.  With the latest 64 bit iteration, it's now completely unusable and hangs on one song forever until I force close it after hours of just sitting there.  If I stop the Clean, it will just restart on the same stuck song over and over again.  Utterly frustrating.  After a year of trying  many, many times I'd either like it to work or get my money back.

I'm surprised Apple would sell a non-functional program on the AppleStore....

This is ridiculous. This program is absolute garbage now. Really glad I spent my money on this junk. Support does nothing but tell you to uninstall and re-install which doesn`t work and god forbid you ask for a refund because all you get is another freeze up. Absolutely disgusted that this program has gone downhill this badly.
