DeDuper isn't working properly

Scot Scheuring
posted this on July 06, 2011 03:53 pm

I ran DeDuper for the first time today.  I expected it to find some duplicates, but wasn't exactly sure how many it would find.  When it finished running it said there were 529 duplicates.  I didn't look through all 529 of them, but the ones I did look through I noticed that the information for each "good" version and "duplicate" version was exactly the same.  Same file name, same location, same size, same quality, etc.  By that I mean that the information for each duplicate is the same, not the same one thing 529 times.  I DeDuped about 30 of them, and then decided to check things out a little more.  For all of these files it's showing a duplicate but there isn't one!  When I click on the "DeDupe" button it moves the file into the Duplicates folder...leaving nothing in the original folder!  I'm glad I decided to do only a few one at a time instead of clicking on the "DeDupe All" button, so I only have to put back 30 songs instead of 529!  What the heck is going on here??  Did I just waste $50??

Why doesn't DeDuper find the same duplicates that iTunes finds?  I have a large library which is why I purchased your product.  It was able to find half the duplicates but there is still a large number it can't find.  Are you going to change your duplicate algorithm to take into account the same criteria that iTunes "find duplicates" does?

Also, another issue is that TuneUp seems to hang for a long time as it can't seem to manage a large library.  I have approx. 45,000 songs in my library and whenever I try to do anything with your product it takes forever for even the simplest tasks.  Is this something you are going to look into?

My issues are similar to the above mentioned.  The application keeps  searching and never finds duplicates.  It hangs and hangs.  I left it running for 72 hours and nothing happens.  It will only do a cleaning of my music files and not 100%.  I still have track 1, track 01 and track 012 files.  But I really want all of the numerous duplicates gone.  I have over 65,000 files but if tune up works like it supposed to, I may only have 40,000.  Please help or refund my money. -- Lorenzo

i ran deduper also and experienced many of the same problems as the people above however it did find 100's of duplicates and they have now been deleted from my itunes library, which is what i wanted. the only problem is that the track names and details still appear in itunes although there is no file attached. please dont tell me i have to manually delete these!!!  otherwise i could have save myself some bucks and just deleted the tracks like this in the first place......

Hello Susan,

In some cases, DeDuper will remove the songs but not the links in iTunes. We are working on resolving this problem.

For now, please try the following to remove the broken links:

1. Make a smart playlist called “All Files” with this rule: “Artist” is not “123456789″ (or any nonsense name that won’t be in your library).

2. Make a static playlist called “All Live Files”.

3. Make a smart playlist called “Missing Files” with these rules: Match all of the following rules, Playlist is “All Files”, Playlist is not “All Live Files”

4. Select all the files from “All Files” and drag them into “All Live Files”. The dead files marked (!) will not copy over.

5. “Missing Files” will contain all of your dead files. Select all and press "option (Mac) or shift (PC) + delete". This should remove the songs from both the library and the playlist.

As for the problem with DeDuper removing files from playlists, since DeDuper chooses the less complete or accurate file to remove, it is sometimes the one that is referenced by a playlist. For this reason it is a good idea to backup playlists before using DeDuper. We will be sure to make this more clear.

I have tried to run deduper at least 10 times.  I run it, and it stays on the importing track data screen, with the circle just spinning. I have left it for a day or more and it never finishes.  I deleted a file from the folder as your faq section suggested, but still nothing.  I have 589.33 GB worth of music.  Can this program not handle that size?  I have a support ticket, but have not gotten any answers yet.

Yeah I agree. I have 135GB of music with many duplicates, hence why I purchased this software to stop me having to go through and review every track one by one. I have run it about 20 times and each time it either crashes, shows duplicates but freezes when i try to remove them and doesn't pick up all my duplicates so i have to run it over and over again... Frustrating and a waste of money... Can I please get some advice or a refund too!!!

I am attempting to use the dedupe feature and when i switch to the tab it states "Syncing with itunes... tuneup must sync with your itunes music library at start up. It had worked originally  but after an update or two it stopped. Please provide a solution or some troubleshooting

I had this problem also.  The system would hang up like it was trying to do something until I downloaded the fix sent to me by emial.  The fix let it start working again, but the next time, it hung up again.  So i reloaded the fix andI it started working again.  I had to do this after each time I used the tune up.

Another problem I had was the deduper kept freezing up.  I believe it was a result of me having too many songs (34,000 before deduping).  It took me several tries until I realized there was a pause function on the deduper.  So I would let it get 1,500 or so songs that needed deduping, then pause it, and then hit "dedupe all".  You could dedupe by song also.    Sometimes it would take several minutes before the songs were deduped (I thought it froze sometimes, but it was just taking a while {no more than 15 minutes}).  After the songs deduped, I would hit the pause button again to continue.  It took a while but I think my problem was that I had way too many songs.

Hope this helps!

Tuneup is still attempting to sync up with iTunes and hangs up each time. Please advise. Also before the last update, when in the Cleanup tab I was able to view each mp3 in its specific folder by right clicking the track for which a proposed tag information was generated.  I am no longer able to do that.

Deduper goes thru a lot of nonsensical gyrations and doesn't remove shit ! It takes a minute or so to tell me its collecting/identifying dupes and then does nothing to eliminate the dupes ...what kind of crap is this ? I am also having trouble. TuneUp DeDuper is not locating all of my dupes at all (or deduping them).

I tried the following suggestion and now I want to use my new "Live Files" playlist to replace my main library. How can I do that? Then I'm hoping to dedupe the live files list once it has replaced my library???

----

I'm consolidating several file locations and libraries so I have a LOT of duplicates.  DeDuper seems to have worked and it moved files to the "TuneUp Duplicates" folder on my hard drive, however iTunes seems to have just redirected its link to that location.  So I still have multiple copies of certain songs in my iTunes library and when I click "Get Info" one of them is in my iTunes Media folders and the rest are in the "TuneUp Duplicates" folder, but they're all still in my library.  How can I remedy this?

Update, I think I fixed this myself, for now (although it would be nice not to have to jump through these hoops in future versions/updates).  I copied the "TuneUp Duplicates" folder to a different disk (all 85 GBs!) and then completely deleted the folder where iTunes was pointing.  This "broke" the links in my iTunes library and then I was able to use the process, re-posted by Amy above, to get rid of the broken duplicates in my library.

Hello,

I have similar problems to those above, Tune Up doesn't work properly. The DeDuper takes forever to find duplicates and then moves on identifying unknown songs without giving the chance to dedupe. Other times it just hangs and never completes the search. When it does identify any dplicates, Tune Up crashes if I ask it to dedupe more than five or six songs at a time. Please help me. Thank you.

uh .. i was going to leave a comment about how crappy deduper is (it even takes 5 minutes to send you guys a message when it crashes) but i see now that it might be redundant ... so instead i'll just say ... yeah! me to!

WTF!!! having to pay for this app after having purchased your 'GOLD' level package was the first insult. the fact that it hardly works is just a kick in the teeth. deduper needs to be rewritten from the ground up .. perhaps a 64bit version?

let me know when things are finally working (never have) correctly. i'm so tired of seeing the 'low on memory' , 'out of memory' messages. it's beyond aggravating (my mac has 9GB ram .. how much memory does this crapplication need?).

i have been trying to get tune up to work prperly for about 3 weeks and i paid for the upgrade i have 28000 songs with about 12000 duplicates that will not get moved. the clean up part does not find but maybe a small percentage of my actual unknowns but after saving them, it still does not update the info it remains unknown. the program has to sync for hours on every startup and hours to complete a task while freezing up and having be restarted several times once in a blue moon does it finnish and then the dedupe all button does not work and the individual dedupe buttons do not work. i want a refund.

guys and gals, I've been fighting this too for several weeks. I found an older TuneUp troubleshooting tip that said if you are using ESET virus scanner add TuneUp to the exception list. I did that and immediately TuneUp started working - 100%. I'd try temporarily turning off virus scanning and see if it starts working. if so, then add tuneup to the exception list. Support folks, we tried everything except this. May be time to re-add the testing of turning off virus scanning to the troubleshooting progress. Hope this helps someone.

Hi Lane,

I believe it is working, but it has to do some processing before it actually starts moving the duplicates to the duplicates folder.

You can confirm this by checking out your "TuneUp Duplicates" folder. It should be populating with songs while DeDuper does its thing. It may take a moment if you have many duplicates for it to go through. I suggest letting it process for about ten minutes.

I also had problems with this from the App store. I decided to do a test and make 5 to 10 copies of the same song until I had about 1500 songs, but really only 300-400 unique songs.  I had cases where there were 10 songs with the exact id and it could not find the duplicates. Now I did notice if I did "deduped" one time, then run it again, it would find more. The only strange thing, and maybe this had an impact, a popup always came up saying that some of the songs were not available and must be at another location. Though I don't think this is true, I could see where the Deduper might get confused in this scenario. No need to write me back, I'm just reporting my findings. I ended up using the Itunes duplicates feature then used the Deduper for the final cleanup.

I have installed DeDuper and it found 4,000 duplicates, which appear to be real duplicates that do need cleaning up.  However, the DeDupe All button does not work and I have to DeDupe each song individually.  it takes several seconds to do each.   How do I make the DeDupe all button work?

It seems like a good program, althoug slow.  However, I have 36,000 songs, so can't really complain.   TuneUp also seems to work reasonably well, although the complaints by others of hanging up does happen quite often

Thanks for the very quick response Ryan.   I did read the previous suggestions.   When I use Deduper on individual songs, the duplicate does show up in the Duplicates folder.  So although slow, it does work one on one.  However, when using the DeDupe All command, nothing happens.  I have left it for an hour, and not one song gets deleted.  It is as if that button does not work.   I can leave it running for 24 hours and see what happens.

Hi Ian,

I suppose a way to test this without waiting so long would be to press "Find Duplicates", and once it has found a few, pause it. This way when you press "DeDupe All" it won't have to process so many songs.

Does the "DeDupe All" feature work after doing this?

No, that did not work.  Neither did waiting twelve hours to see if it would respond.   DeDuper is not working, unless done one by one and even then, the process is tedious.   Still have 3900 to go.  Ideas?

I am away for a week, so won't respond until my return and thanks for your help Ryan.

Yeah this sucks. I now have 9,000 tracks in the Duplicates folder and apparently many (or all?!) of them have been removed from iTunes completely, thus destroying playlists and tracks throughout iTunes. I'm very displeased with paying money to have this done to my tracks.

Why does the Duplicates folder removed both duped and original files from the iTunes music library? What am I supposed to do at this point?

Not only do I have a incredibly large music collection, I also merged my music back ups so as to not miss anything. I purchased Tune-Up specifically to better manage my tags, as well as to remove duplicates; both which I have had mixed results with.

As regards the duplicates, here are some problems I have:
I don't want it to scan my whole library for duplicates. My music library is so large that my system runs out of memory!

Suggestion: Give the user the option to scan the whole collection, or to drag-n-drop like you do for tagging.
Suggestion: When you do find duplicates why don't you suggest to remove the lowest quality version, AND make the file format that you have set in iTunes (e.g. MP3, MP4, FLAC, etc) be the preserved duplicate.

By file format set in iTunes, I mean the format that you have iTunes set to rip new CDs to.

A former Gold customer who no longer used the product.  I received your email offering the upgrade and thought I would give it another try.  I have the same problem as Sidian Jones above.  I can see that duplicates were moved, but so too apparently were all itunes links to the files as I cannot play anything in itunes now.

I tried to access the History tab referenced in the documentation, but I only have a tab that says "files" and notes the location of the duplicates.  Us there any way to reset or undo?  I'll go back o having duplicates and happily uninstall  this program if I can.

I kept getting the Out of memory error and could never remove any of my duplicates.  The only way I could get the DeDuper to work is as its scanning, click the Dedupe All button before the duplicate tracks get to 100.  If the tracks get to more than 200 I had to pause the scan and then click Dedupe All and wait for it to clear the list.  I have already removed over 5000 tracks this way and I am not even half way through my library of 55000 songs!  Hope this can help a few of you with removing your dupes.

I'm not quite sure what's going on here. This use to work. Of course I was using a prior version not sold through the App store. There are definite issues with this portion of their software.  They may not let this print but Anti-Twin and Searchmyfiles are two really good free software programs that find and delete duplicate files. Both can use the hash. Searchmyfiles even lets you specify the priority of folders that are searched, It's also extremely fast. Both run on Windows.

Hello.  Just purchased Tuneup Bundle for $50.  It seems to be working fine, BUT.. the "DEDUPE ALL" button will not Dedupe ALL?  I either have to go do them singularly, or via iTunes (which is faster I hate to say).

I allow the Dedupe enough time to scan/analyze/and finish.  Then when I hit Dedupe All, nothing happens.  Though it will let me do this one by one.  Really, I have greater than 1000 dupes as I'm totally rebuilding my music/ipod collection, cleaning, fixing etc.  Is there a way to get this thing to Dedupe All?

Running: Windows 7 64bit, updated and current, 8gb Ram, 2TB HD, current iTunes installed.

Help please?

Me too! Does it work if you limit it to say 50 or 100 duplicates?

I do not see a way to limit the amount I can dedupe at one time.  It scans the whole iTunes and comes up with a batch of dupes.  There is either a "Dedupe ALL" or singularly.  There is NO other option to reduce the amount of bulk dupes to a certain number.  Just was tediously worked on it... which is a bummer.

I was down to 30 dupes, and no, the button for Dedupe ALL did NOT work.

I have the same problem. De-dupe all function definitely does`t work. Tell me if you are able to make an update soon. Otherwise I want my money back.

Deduper seems to work, but after deduping, all the duplicates still appear in iTunes. What I would like is that the duplicates disappear in iTunes. Is this by design or is this an issue?

Hello Ronald,

This is generally a result of closing iTunes while it is still in the process of removing the track aliases. Please try the following to remove the broken links:

Select all the songs in iTunes and slightly drag them. Don't drag them to anything but just slightly drag them and drop them in the same spot. This will reveal all the songs with '!' next to them.

Ryan from TUNEUP support,

Is there a fix for the DEDUPE ALL button?  It appears I am not the only one having this issue, please see my earlier comment (6 comments above this one).

We need to know an answer if there is one available.  Paid $50 for the program, and would like it to have all of its functionality if possible.

Sincerely, Wendy

Hi Wendy,

Almost every report of this has been resolved by waiting to let DeDuper process. We are currently working on adding a progress bar to prevent any confusion.

Here is a way to be sure that it actually is processing:

For PC, Press the F8 key.
For Mac, Hold down the Fn (Function) key and press F8 simultaneously.

A blue window should appear at the bottom of the TuneUp window. Within this blue window locate the field containing the word "none". Highlight "none" and replace it with the word "all" (without quotations). Then, press the "enter" key.

Then, press DeDupe All, and you should see that is indeed working. Since it has a lot to process, it can take some time to see the songs actually being moved to the TuneUp Duplicates folder.

If you are sure that it isn't working after doing this, please create a support ticket so a member of our support staff can assist you directly.

Best Regards,
TuneUp Media Support

Got a lightning fast response with excellent suggestions. I just needed to be more patient... got 1000s of dups... it was working fine.

@Ryan, thank you, I will try it on my next tune up session, and let you know if it is working as expected.

@ Ronald, yes, you did get a lightning fast response, same day even.  However, I submitted my question on the 13th (grant it, it was Sunday, a non Business day) and have been waiting, so when your question was answered quickly, ahead of mine and others with same problem, I repectfully submitted mine again. & just got a nice response.  Patience is a virtue, but after 3 hours and no progress bar or anything when attempting to dedube all, I was compelled to write my question.  Even when my dupes were down to only 30, nothing happened.  (after manually deleting hundreds on my own)

So glad it worked for you first time out of the gate, I will see if I am as successful,.... soon.  Need to head to work now.

Thank you,

Wendy

I keep getting a low memory error when it's about 99% done searching for duplicates.  I have about 41k songs. Is 8 gig RAM not enough? Running Win7 64bit, 2.7ghz AMD Phenom II  X6 1045T processor.  the computer is an ASUS CG1330.  I even have a flash drive plugged in as a ReadyBoost (4gig).  I have been trying for months to get this to work and it's not worked at all.     Even "Clean" seems to mislable lots of songs and rip[ already together albums apart.  I'm not very happy with this software for how much it has cost.

My DeDuper won't recognize my duplicates.  I have at least 2,000 of them.   I've done the scan twice and it still comes up with nothing.  Please help.

DeDuper seemed to find the duplicates alright, I have 4676 of them, However, I clicked "DeDupe All" and it's been running for 24 hours. I tried the F8, all / none method and see

XPCOM in "memoryUse"

{
  "virtual":737556,
  "virtualLimit":1677721,
  "physical":649636,
  "physicalLimit":1992294
}

Hi Paul,

I believe it is working, but it has to do some processing before it actually starts moving the duplicates to the duplicates folder.

You can confirm this by checking out your "TuneUp Duplicates" folder. It should be populating with songs while DeDuper does its thing. It may take a moment since you have many duplicates for it to go through.

If it takes hours and nothing happens, please create a support ticket so a member of our support staff can help troubleshoot the issue.

I recently had to re-install windows(7, home premium 64 bit if that makes a difference) Somehow ALL of my music got duplicated. Ran deduper, it finds about 5000k duplicate files, but when I click dedupe all I get no response. If I click the dedupe button on the individual song it works after a few seconds, but not getting any response from dedupe all. Any suggestions?

i'm just curios .. is anybody out there getting any joy out of this?

i've been on this thread for ... let's see .. uh .. almost 2 months and have yet to see anyone say .. "thanks .. this application ain't so bad after all." .. or ... "your solution helped me fix my problem. thank you, tuneUp tech person".

i'm a patient fellow, but i don't see any solutions here. ready to throw in the towel.

Spot on Jqhines!

Great branding, good website, good GUI..... however the product DOESN'T WORK.

Yes - it will identify the duplicates but it can't remove them. I've written off the £12.50 and put it down to experience, uninstalled and bought a rival product which did the job in about an hour!

Thank you to all for your efforts, it took me a while to get it, I mean lots of hopeless nonsense to read before finding find out the right solution / information, but at the end it all works.

I have 8 gigs of RAM and was runing out of memory "Warning" I found out that if I  ignore the message and left it up, that the program was able to finish it's scan and then Dedupe All was possible.

Perhaps create a quick info guide info on your main page on this topic about what to and how to on this topic solution!  not every one will read on like I did it would seem!

Yes Ryan, a progress bar is a great ideal.

Also being able to click and drags a playlist to dedupe is a great suggestion with and undo button. perhaps a missing file "!" tag clean up feature would be nice.

Best wishes

I'm very curious if the people that are getting this to work are all running Windows? I don't see any OSX, Lion, Apple, Mac wording in this thread. Any comments? Still not working for me on OSX Lion, the version from the App store.

Thanks, Paul

I am using a 17 inc MacBookPro, Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Lacie 2 TB Fire Wire 800 external drive, Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4

It works if you are patient, and take the time to read about how to use it, it does crash randomly at times, In my experience if  you do a fresh reboot, not run any other program, and let TuneUp take over the computer resources for the process you will get it done, I had 57.000 songs and it took me a week to get my self through it, lots of over night helps if you have no patience,  I finally cleaned up over 15,000 songs miss labeled or tagged, and removed over 8000 duplicates, I haven't played with my iTunes play list yet, so I just hope nothing is missing, but I still have my duplicated folder to fall back on if so!

Over all, it did in one week What I never got around to do in the last 6 Years. So suck it up people, to many spoil children are crying for no reason here in my view.  Compare to Avid Tech Support, Ryan is on the Ball and is working with us. I appreciate that very much.

SO I Personnally would like to Thank Ryan for is hard work and dedication, I know it is  only going to get better.

So...what I wanted from deduper.  Run the programme.  Detect the Dupes. Delete the Dupes.  That's all.  Not too much to ask for 20 dollars?  This programme is an OMNISHAMBLES.  It doesn't do what it says it does.  I have run it several times... each time it takes ages.  Then it mass delete button doesn't work.  Or it just runs out of memory and gives up.  Lovely how it signs you up to a YEARLY repeat payments for this nonworking software.  I would advise people to check paypal and make sure they cancel repeat payments if this is as useless for them as it is for me.

Ivan, I'm just beginning your journey as I have far too many copies but I wonder if when you've done it you actually get any benefits? How does it actually effect the file structure within the my music library?

The De-Duper is a joke. I have wasted hours trying to make this work properly. Finally erased all duplicates from over 200 albums manually!  I must request an immediate refund.

Hi Peter, for what it is worth, I have over 55,000 songs and manage to clear over 85 Gig of duplicates, I still have lots to clear but I am working on it with some tech support between gigs, I understand that it is an app that has some bugs and issues, but it  did a good chunk  which would have taking me a long time to retag and removed over 85 gigs of duplicates. That is   allot more than I have the time to do manually, I hope that with the dedicated tech support we will find ways to remove all the duplicates and have a 100% find rate,  Right now I would say that it is at about 40% there but is still better than doing it all manually, I Know! been trying for the last 5 years.LOL B-side, you will get upgrades as they are release RIGHT!

Hi,

I wanted to let you know that we just released a new update for TuneUp that has many improvements and bug fixes.

Specifically, some of the improvements relate to better progress messaging for DeDuper and faster syncing of the moved files with your iTunes library. This should help to resolve the broken links issue some users were seeing after using DeDuper.

Has anyone actually got this product to work? When I bought a new compter lst year the guys who transferred my old data managd to create some kind of mirror effect with the iTubes library, so there is a duplicate of all 2,500 tunes. This ruined my enjoyment of my iPod because the way this happened every dupicate plays as two tracks running within each album  not a two albums. When I saw this prodct I thought my prayers had been answered. But it simply does not work. At this point even though half the database isduplicate tracks, it is telling me my data is 96% clean.

Tim,

I sure hope you are using the App store version or the old version off the website? I was told the new App store version would be out very soon. This fixes a lot of issues.

Thanks, Paul
